Changes to Document Numbers on German Passports and ID Cards

Effective January 1st

Unique Document Numbering System Implemented

Since January 1st, a new system for assigning unique document numbers to German passports and ID cards has been implemented. This change aims to enhance security and prevent identity fraud.

The new document number consists of a combination of letters and numbers. It is unique to each individual and is used to identify their documents for official purposes.

The previous document numbering system, which used a combination of a letter and a seven-digit number, has been phased out. Passports and ID cards issued before January 1st will continue to be valid, but new documents will have the updated numbering format.

The German government advises citizens to update their official documents that contain their document number, such as driver's licenses, health insurance cards, and bank cards. Any outstanding questions or concerns can be directed to the relevant authorities.
